Espaliered Pear Trees!
June 08, 2006
This is my favorite part of the Hershey Childrens Garden http://www.cbgarden.org/ , called "The Berry Patch!" It is a rectangle the size of a small living room, and in it we grow enough berries and hanging fruits to easily feed a family of four! What you are seeing is one of the espaliered pear trees. The technique of espaleiring is an old French gardening technique develpoed to make the most productive use of a little bit of space. By training the trees to branch out against a wire, wall or fence, and then pruning them properly to maintain the shape, you create a very productive fruit tree, with fewer , yet larger and better fruits! High maintainance to be sure, yet so gratifying! For a wonderful article about espaliering http://www.scenicnursery.com/archives/002422.html
